Yahoo! oneSearch — What's new

Thoughts from the Yahoo!® oneSearch team

How do you spell “A-n-t-i-d-i-s-e-s-t-a-b-l-i-s-h-m-e-n-t-a-r-i-a-n-i-s-m?"
With Search Assist, you don’t.

We, at the Yahoo! oneSearch team, understand how sometimes, your mind works faster than your fingers can type. That’s why we’ve brought Search Assist to the mobile user--a popular innovation that Yahoo! oneSearch leverages from the PC search product. As you type, Search Assist automatically offers search terms and phrases in real time. Search Assist saves time by offering the most likely completions, reducing the need to type the full search. This is especially useful on mobile phones. By making suggestions as you type, it also eliminates one of the hardest parts of searching and helps you format the most efficient query. Query suggestions help users refine a search faster and improve the overall search experience.

Search Assist is useful…

…when you’re typing long queries: Just type in the first few letters of a long query and search assist automatically gives you suggestions. For example, if you’re looking for the address of the nearest Cheesecake Factory restaurant, just type “chee.” Search Assist will offer several possibilities, including “Cheescake Factory” allowing you to quickly click on the right option, rather than finish typing the entire word.

…when you're not sure how to spell a word: Let’s say you’re at a restaurant, and want to get a review for a bottle of Gewürztraminer they are featuring on today’s menu. You only have to type in “gerwu,” and Search Assist will do the rest—offering you a one click link to more info on Gewürztraminer.

…when you type a very general term: For example, type "apple" and Search Assist offers "Also try" suggestions that include completed searches like “Apple Store,” "apple crisp recipe," or "Applebees." One click makes your search more specific, and gets you the exact answer you want.

Search Assist works on any phone with an AJAX capable browser. Initially, search assist will be supported on the iPhone with additional device support in the coming months.
